LITTLE BABE SHOWER
When it comes to baby showers are you meant to follow tradition and abide by what's written in the baby book as the 'right way'... or do you just screw it and just do it 'your way'? I mean who really follows tradition these days anymore? I found that as soon as we announced our baby news, I had many of my closest gal pals asking me straight away if I was going to be having a baby shower. I felt so fortunate that my gfs wanted to make the effort to come and share this special day with me, so it just didn't seem right to have other people organise it on my behalf. I know not everyone wants or desires to have a baby shower, whatever their reasons may be; for me I couldn't wait. I am lucky to have many of my kiwi gals living in QLD (yes we all moved from windy Wellington to picturesque QLD), my immediate family also live here so I couldn't wait to get everyone together. I have always loved planning and organising events, without coming across as too confident about it; I'm pretty darn good at it too haha. I feel like it's an absolute given to celebrate the life of what's brewing inside that one-pack for yours, especially for your first bub.
I personally wanted to stay clear of the 'traditional' baby shower, you know with all of those cringe worthy baby games like guessing the poo in the diaper etc. Initially the hubby and I had every intention of having a mixed shower with guys attending too. Unfortunately given the footy draw had not been released for the remainder of the season; the date that we had already chosen ended up being an away game for him. So a ladies only event it was.
If you are wondering when to have your baby shower, you can have it at any stage that's suitable for you but most women generally have it somewhere within the third trimester. I had mine just before I reached 34 weeks. I didn't want to leave it too late as most pregnant women tend to get very uncomfortable around this stage if not sooner, also you just never know; the little one may want to make an early grand entrance.
To gift registry or to not gift registry? Nowadays it's very common to have a registry at a baby store franchise or department store such as David Jones or MYER. I felt uncomfortable about doing a registry but each to their own (there is nothing wrong with a registry if you want to have one). I think because I had many guests travel, I didn't want people to feel obliged to have to turn up with a gift and I didn't want people to think that I expected anything. If guests contacted me directly asking if there was anything in specific I needed or asking for ideas on what to get; I felt much more comfortable discussing it with them.
Don't get me wrong I am definitely not ungrateful, but I was dreading the thought of receiving an endless amount of 'PINK' baby clothes and items. Yes, I know I am having a girl... but I am not one who is excited about dressing her head to toe in bright fuchsia pink (not that there is anything wrong with that) but that's not my style or personal taste.
I had a number of friends travelling interstate so I wanted to put on a bit of a shindig and make it worth their while. To some, you may think it's a bit OTT but I wanted to do something different than your usual baby shower and make it a lovely event enjoyed by all. I know some people genuinely dread the thought of going to a baby shower. Like YAWN, that's our afternoon cancelled out! I wanted a nice and relaxing atmosphere, somewhere with a view and some sunshine.
I found an incredible rooftop venue called Eagles Nest Brisbane which is located at The Point Hotel, Kangaroo Point in Brisbane. Offering sweeping views overlooking the Brisbane River, city skyline and Story Bridge; as soon as I found this place I knew it was perfect for my shower. If you decide to have your shower at a venue be sure to ask if you can use your own suppliers in addition as some venues are very strict with their guidelines, like styling and sweets tables etc so make sure that if you are wanting to out-source you have the option to do so as this is a money saver for sure.
Now we are getting into the good stuff... choosing a baby shower theme! Even though I knew the sex of the baby, I have never really been a colour kind of gal so again 'PINK' was out of the question. I mean at our wedding we had hues of soft dove grey, soft pale pink and monochrome (so I don't rule the pink out completely). For my shower I decided on a whimsical, bohemian, rustic all white affair with touches of greenery, black, marble and gold. I didn't want to be running around like a headless chook on the day setting up so I obtained a few quotes to get someone else to set up and create all of the styling for me but it was substantially cheaper to do it all myself. That way I could control exactly how I wanted it to look, I know I am pretty fussy and I would probably end up changing the way someone else would have done it anyway haha. Sometimes it's hard for an outsider to create a vision that only you have in your head. So I ended up styling my entire baby shower with the help of some amazing suppliers in Brisbane and afar who collaborated with me to bring it to life.
BEVERAGE + CHAMPAGNE STATION
I set up a Moet on Ice Champagne Station, where guests could help themselves as they pleased. The venue were able to source all of the white Moet goblets for me, so to indulge you just grabbed a goblet, some ice, choose your selection of fruits and pour in the Moet and Voila... perfection!
There was the main bar set up on the rooftop balcony where guests were able to choose from a selection of wines, non-alcoholic beverages, and for myself and other expecting mama's attending they were able to enjoy the mocktail of the day (oh how convenient) 'Preggatini's'.
The ever so talented Kayla from Bombardier Designs (Baby Bombardier) created my custom made 'Little Babe Shower' marble invitations, personalised champagne labels and my personalised 'Bambina Boyd' milk chocolates. Due to the little crazy marble obsession I have going on, my invitations HAD to be marble! Kayla from BD is always an absolute pleasure to work with as I have gone through her many of times over the past couple of years for my previous business and past events. A touch of Bombardier Designs somewhere is always needed I say!
I was gifted two amazing custom chalk boards from Fox and Fallow one being my welcome sign and the other an Instagram hashtag chalkboard. Be sure to create a hashtag for your event, it's such a simple way for your event to be collated on social media and for everyone attending to be able to grab other images if they wish to. Ummm can we all just take a moment to appreciate that chalk font.... deeevine! Check out the amazing range of sign boards, chalkboards and stationery that F+F can customise to your very own special event or wedding. A force to be reckoned with!
The monochrome stationery was designed by yours truly (me), Champagne Station, Bebe vase labels, Nail polish favours, Menu's, Treats sign, Mocktail sign and I purchased some cheap frames from Kmart!
I came across Karlee from Karlees Kupcakes on Instagram. When you look through her insta feed you're sure to have some massive mouth watering problaaams for sure. Karlee created the perfect cake and cupcakes for my shower. I was set on having a naked cake and my favourite flavour is white chocolate so Karlee created a 6 inch 4 layer naked white chocolate mud cake with vanilla buttercream icing and a marble custom topper. I got a dozen vanilla flavoured cupcakes with gooey salted caramel in the middle.
I am not just saying this, but I will never ever go through another cake/cupcake maker again as long as I am living in Brisbane. Karlee girl you are amaze!
I had a few different suppliers help out in the treats department to make my 'Treat Yo'Self' table come to fruition. Hansel and Gretel Cakes gifted the amazing marble heart cookies, white gold flake assorted chocolates filled with a mix of both white chocolate and nutella and 20 white chocolate macarons. Pretty sure those white chocolates were literally inhaled within the hour - too good for words!
I wanted some meringues and came across Fiori Bakehouse I got in touch with the girl behind Fiori Anna and she recommended their Acorn flavoured meringues which are white vanilla, dipped in dark chocolate and garnished with crushed pistachio.
I purchased the remaining white sweets and lollies from Toms Confectionery
I had white florals scattered throughout the venue, my beautiful flower crown and the whimsical 'BABY' garland were created by the incredible gals at The White Bungalow
Now don't be afraid to seek a bit of help from your gal pals, I am sure there are some who would love to help and be involved in your planning. My girlfriends organised the most thoughtful and gorgeous games table for me, this was such a huge help and I think it's good for the Mama-to-be to not have to organise the games for her own shower. They kept it very chic and tied it in well with the monochrome styling perfectly. Games included;
- Guess the babys due date
- Guess Mummy's tummy
- Advice for the Mama-to-be
- Who's that baby
- Wish jar
- Create a headband
OTHER PERSONAL TOUCHES
Lyndal Carmichael Photography I booked a professional photographer for the day so that I didn't have to worry too much about carrying my phone around with me or having to ask people to take some snaps on my behalf. I've always been a photo person, when I was younger I used to buy those $10 disposable camera's and have photo's blue-tacked all over my bedroom walls from ceiling to floor. So it was a no brainer for me when deciding whether to have a photographer or not. As you can see from the images above it was well worth getting Lyndal to shoot my little babe shower. White Style & Co provided me with a stunning peacock chair to sit in when opening my gifts!
If your expecting and haven't started planning your baby shower I hope that my non-traditional baby shower inspires you to create your own unique baby shower too.
To those of you who asked about my baby shower dress, it's from Zimmermann.
Thank you to all who contributed to making this such a magical day! Countdown is on for Baby Boyd x
